The Flight West

Kev & I had pretty much packed everything up the night before. We stayed up late that night so we could go ahead & get on Vegas time. Stayed up til about 3am so that would be 12am PST. We slept in the next day.
Our flight was originally scheduled to leave from Charleston at 4:53pm. But it got delayed 3 times. It took us forever to get out of Charleston. I didn't think we were ever going to get out of there. Apparently there was a storm system over Atlanta that was the cause of the delay.
We were supposed to take 3 flights to get to Vegas. 1st from Charleston to Atlanta, 2nd from Atlanta to Tucson, and 3rd from Tucson to Vegas. Needless to say when the flight leaving Charleston got delayed the 1st time, we would pretty much end up missing the other flights. But we spoke with the Delta rep and she (being ever so kind) changed our flight plan so we could catch a direct flight from Atlanta to Vegas. How nice was that? However if the Charleston flight had got delayed one more time, we would have missed that flight & got stuck in Atlanta for the night.
Once we were finally in the air it was pretty smooth sailing. The Atlanta airport was huge. Had a nice subway system that we took to the terminal where the flight to Vegas would be departing.
The flight to Vegas. Now that was a memorable flight. The plane itself was enormous. It had 2 aisles & a center section for seats. Naturally we were stuck in the center, which I hated. I like to be able to look out the window or at least have a decent view of the window. We did get to watch the movie "Fracture". I fell asleep halfway through it though. Have to rent it now that I'm home so I can see the ending. LoL. That flight was like 4 hours long. It seemed to take forever.
Time we landed in Vegas it was 12:30am PST. That would make it 3:30am EST. I was soooo tired. It seemed to take forever for our bags to come through the baggage claim. We took a shuttle bus to the resort. It must have been the Vegas air, but once I was outside the airport I felt completely rejuvenated. That or the excitedment of finally being in Vegas!!
Check-in was a breeze. The desk clerk was quite helpful. We got up to our room & found that it wasn't one of the newly renovated rooms. But at the price we were paying we really wasn't expecting it to be. (We found a deal & got our rooms 1/2 off). One things for sure: we had an AWESOME view. We were on the 11th floor. Our 2 windows looked out over the pool area, past there we had a great view of the balloon @ Paris & the Bellagio fountains.
We ended staying up til almost 4am Vegas time, but we did end up getting everything unpacked. We mutually agreed to sleep as late as humanly possible the next day.

1st Whole Day in Vegas

Kev & I slept in so late today. We didn't get up until like noon Vegas time...so thats like 3pm back home. We changed into our swim suits and headed out by the pool. Towels were plenty and there was only 2 good seats left by the pool so we grabbed those up. Lounged around for awhile and swam. That Vegas heat was smoldering! I like it hot but not that hot... LoL. Anyways the pool area is a bit boring when compared to other hotels. Some have beaches, wave pools, cabanas, etc. Not PH but hopefully they'll update it sometime in the near future.
We came back up by the room and showered then went out to explore the resort. The resort itself is fabulous. The casino wasn't as big as others but I liked it. Wasn't big enough to get lost in like a lot of the other casinos, we found our way around pretty good. At least I did, Kev tried to get us lost a few times. Room service had left a coupon in our room for so much off at the buffet so we headed there to grab some grub. PH's Spice Market Buffet was rated #1 in Las Vegas and I can see why. They have such a wide variety of food, theres something there for everyone. Still its a bit pricey when compared to others, Fremont Street has the cheapest. For the 2 of us (including the coupon) it was still $35.
Then we went and signed up for PH's A-List Players Club so we could pull their $2 million slot pull. Biggest jackpot in Vegas! If you win you get $1 million cash & $1 million to spend in the mall adjacent to the hotel.
The timeshare people actually got us today too. Stopped us in the casino & asked it we got our free gift. So they conned us into signing up to do a timeshare later that week for tickets to the Hans Klok/Pamela Anderson show, Nathan Burton comedy show, free mini-vacation, and a free dinner at a Brazilian Grille restaurant. What can I say, we're such suckers! LoL.
Next we headed straight for the mall attached to the hotel called the "Miracle Mile". It is a whole mile long mall full of all these really cool shops. You can find just about anything in that mall, from Quiksilver to Fredericks of Hollywood to Bebe and even a Bettie Page store. Theres this one store ABC store that you can get all your necessities from. We tried not to buy a lot from the resort's gift shop...the prices are jacked up. The only thing about the mall better than all the stores was all the restaurants. Good good restaurants...more to come on those later.
After we made a lap around the mall we decided to head south down the strip. Right across the street from our hotel was a Harley Davidson Cafe. We didn't get a chance to eat there but I hear its pretty good. On down the strip is a little shopping area thats pretty cool. Past it theres a Mickey D's and a Walgreens. We made several trips to Walgreens during our stay moreso just to buy something and get cash back. Unfortunately theres no BB&Ts out west. And the fees to use an ATM out there are kinda steep. I hate paying those ridiculous fees!
First hotel we visited was MGM. Beautiful hotel. Its all emerald green on the outside like Emerald City in the Wizard of Oz with this hugemongous gold lion outside. Once inside the hotel we ran across the first of many "Win-A-Car" slots we would try our hand at. This one was probably the best though...Brand new Red Convertible Viper baby. OMG it was pretty. We spent more trying to win that thing than we did anywhere else. There were a bunch of people trying to win it though. Further on inside the hotel is the Lion Habitat. It was pretty cool. Saw a few lionesses playing around. Reminded me of our 2 cats back home.
After leaving MGM we headed over to NYNY. Pretty nice theme there. You really feel like you're in NY City. We didn't get to ride the coaster there but I wish we woulda it looked too cool weaving in and out of the NY skyscrapers. We always said we'd come back later that week but didn't get a chance too. Gambled a lil there and then headed further south.
Then we crossed Tropicana and walked past Excaliber. I wish we woulda went in Excaliber now because we didn't find out until later that week it would be imploded soon. Apparently people think the whole castle theme looks a lil too much like Disney World... Vegas isn't very kid friendly.
Past Excaliber we visited the Luxor. Very very nice hotel. If you stay there you definitely want to stay in the pyramid. The elevators there run on an incline along the pyramid. Never seen anything quite like that. I like the whole Egyptian theme though. Very cool.
Next we stopped by Mandalay Bay. One of Kev's favs. Very very very nice. The hotel looks like its gold-plated. We walked around inside and checked out their beach area. Probably the best pool area in all of Vegas. We were wanting to visit the Shark Reef but the line was horrendousl.
Then we hitched a ride on the Tram from Mandalay Bay back up to the Luxor. Had no idea it was free or we woulda took it on our way down. Lol. We trekked the long walk back to the PH and changed for dinner. Then we headed up the strip on our way to the Flamingo. We ended up taking the monorail because we were so tired from walking all day. Still ended up walking quite a distance though.
Once we got to the Flamingo it took us what seemed like forever to get to Margaritaville. The wait wasn't too long. We were seated on the front of a boat, how cool is that. Even brought us a candle for our romantic dinner. :) Call me crazy but I think dinner at Margaritaville is romantic. The one at Orlando was a lil more on the romantic side but still. We devoured a plate of the Volcano Nachos. Some of the best nachos I've ever had. Mmmm. Speaking of mmmm...Kevin had like 3 margaritas and I had 2 strawberry daiquiris. Delicious. Kev had fajitas and I had the Cheeseburger in Paradise. Quite yummy.
Needless to say after we left we were a bit tipsy so we stumbled our way back to the monorail station and then headed back to the hotel. It was getting pretty late but you can't tell over there. Its lit up just like daytime at night. Saw a good show of the Fountains at the Bellagio that night though.

Slots, Pet Show, & Stomp Out Loud

Again we slept in. Woke up and headed straight for the pool. The pool was pretty crowded but somehow we managed to find 2 lounge chairs together. Laid out for awhile & goofed off in the pool a bit. I'm pretty sure everybody there thought we were honeymooners the way were acting. Lol. What fun. While at the pool our tour guide for the Hoover Dam comedy tour called us to see if we could reschedule our tour. We were originally supposed to go the next day (Monday 8/20) but agreed to go later that week (Wednesday 8/22). They even offered to pick us up at our hotel! We were going to have to walk over to the next hotel in order to catch the bus.
After a quick shower and a change of clothes we decided to go to the Pet Show I had already bought tickets for online. The show itself wasn't until later that afternoon but I had vouchers we had to claim in order to get our seats. Lucky for us the Popovich's Comedy Pet Theater was located in the Miracle Mile adjacent to the Planet Hollywood. We turned our vouchers in and splurged on the VIP seats so we'd get a better view. I had secretly wanted to get close enough to pet something but I wasn't quite that close. We had some time to kill before we headed to the show so we went to grab a bite to eat at Cheeseburger Las Vegas. Some pretty good eats & actually at a halfway decent price too. I think this was one of our cheapest meals while we were in Vegas. Not counting Mickey D's of course.
After we ate we explored the mall a lil bit and picked out some souvenirs to get before we headed home. Somehow someway we wandered back into the casino at the PH and decided we wanted to give their $2 million slot pull at try. We got a voucher for free entry into the Daily Slot Tournment & decided to head that way. Sure enough it was right around the corner. And what fun we had! We both ended up doing really good. But I kicked Kev's butt of course (its only natural after all). I ended up with the 3rd highest score for the day and won 2 tickets to the PH's award winning show "Stomp Out Loud"! Tickets for our seats regularly ran at about $80 each! We decided to go ahead and see the show that same evening since we didn't have anything planned.
Now time for the Pet Show. And it was really really good. Good combination of pets, magic, and comedy. We both laughed our butts off. Now I wish we woulda bought the DVD afterwards. I just love pet shows! This one wasn't as good as the one we saw at Sea World last year (Pets Ahoy!) but it sure was close!
At this point we only had a few hours to kill before the "Stomp" so where did we head? Back to the casino of course! Kev tried his hand at Poker but didn't fair to well. He did pretty decent on the regular shots. Every time he'd get low, I'd make him cash out. Then I'd go play some BlackJack and win it back! Hehe. I kick some butt at some BlackJack let me tell you. I actually got ID-ed today while we were gamblin away. Haha. I'm 25...so thats funny. Kev got ID-ed when we'd go out to restaurants and he's 31.
Had to go back to the timeshare people and see if we could attend the timeshare presentation being held the next day. We had originally scheduled the presentation for Wednesday but now that our Hoover Dam tour was rescheduled, there was no way we could go to the timeshare thing that day. They said sure no problemo! And scheduled us for the very next day. I told Kev to practice saying "NO" starting right now. Lol. We're just in it for the free tickets/dinner/etc....or so I thought....
Then we went to see "Stomp". Awesome awesome show. Totally worth paying $80 a seat if you ask me. Innovative, entertaining, and amusing. I'd never imagine people could make "music" with ordinary things like trash cans, newspapers, etc. Very very creative.
After "Stomp" we headed back to the Miracle Mile to grab a bite to eat at Blondie's. Pretty good restaurant. Food was really good. We just missed the "Drink and Drown" for the day so we vowed to return the next day just to participate. After grabbing some grub we headed back to the casino yet again before retiring for the night.

Wax Museum & Caesars Palace

Got up this morning and decided to walk to the Mickey Ds down the street. It seems so much closer but in reality it was far far away. Time we got there I was a starvin! Ate and then checked out some nearby shops before hitting Walgreens for some souvenirs. Headed back to the casino, threw on the swimsuits to go out by the pool for a bit. Then we rushed back in to shower and change ...then we were off to the timeshare presentation..
And what a presentation it turned out to be. Very very nice. Heck if I had $40,000 to spend I'd prob get one, but thats a bit pricey for my taste. And the timeshares are being built in a new building right behind the PH resort hotel. So its not even like your right on the strip or anything. LoL. Well that ole lady bout got us. Thats fer sure. We kept talking about how we were planning on having kids in the next couple years and not really planning to bring our kids to Vegas and all. Actually mentioned we were more Disney World people. Big mistake there. Turns out that company actually owned timeshares in Orlando too. [FYI: Orlando's the 2nd most popular vacation spot in the USA...with Vegas being #1] They were such a bargain though. $10k for a two bedroom suite in Orlando like 2 miles from Disney World. I think we're still kicking ourselves in the butt for not taking it. Thats cheap for a timeshare. It was only every other year. But I figure we'll rotate taking our future kid(s) on vacation - one year in Orlando, next in Myrtle. Why didn't we? Kevin kept looking at me for the go ahead but I just couldn't do it. Now I kinda wish we woulda. Lol. Oh well.
Then we headed back to the mall. Ate at Blondies and watched some sports! Drink & Drown baby. Bud Lite all the way. I got a bit of a buzz after that. But I totally got my $10 worth. :) Right after we ate we had our caricature drawn at this booth in the mall. Kev tipped the guy too much. Lol. Shopped around a bit in the Miracle Mile. Kev bought him some stuff at Quiksilver. Tryed to talk me into buying a bathing suit, but heck no. If I'm gonna pay that much for a swimsuit I'd prefer one from Victoria's Secret.
Then we dropped our stuff off at the room and grabbed a Taxi to go to the Venetian. I think the taxi guy took us the long way just to get more money. But I"m not a local so what do I know. The Venetian was absolutely gorgeous! Kevin always said he'd take me to Italy one day. :) Beautiful. One of the most beautiful hotels in all of Vegas if you ask me. Very very nice shopping too.
We explored the Venetian for awhile and then headed off to the Wax Museum. We had such a ball there! I tried to pose all silly with everybody but I didn't pull it off all that well. Kev on the otherhand was so comical. He posed with everybody! It was so funny! I especially like the ones with Marilyn & Elvis. & Jenna too. Haha.
Upon leaving the Venetian we headed back toward the PH. Stopping off at Caesar's Palace of course. To be honest Caesar's probably has the best shopping area on the strip. I just love the Forum shops. They have such a wide variety of stores. The revolving escalators are quite unique too. And the Atlantis fountain show. They have a wide variety of restaurants. Even the delicious Cheescake Factory.
We opted for the Planet Hollywood restaurant inside the Forum Shops. How weird is it that the PH resort is right down the street. You think the restaurant would be housed in the hotel that has its name but no. Very very good food. I always like PH restaurants for the atmosphere and decor. Kev bought his pilsner glass to go with the matching Margaritaville one he bought the other day. (He collects pilsners from his fav restaurants).
We headed back to the PH. On our way back caught another nice show at the Bellagio. Those fountains are spectacular. Strange choices in music sometimes though. Oh well. After a lil more gamblin and a few more free drinks we headed back to the room to crash.

Grand Canyon

We stayed up entirely too late the night before. As today we had to get up bright and early to catch our bus to the Grand Canyon. We got up showered, dressed and ran to the bus area. Needless to say there were so many other buses there we didn't have a clue which one was ours. After some searching we realized our bus wasn't there just yet. So after waiting for like 15-20 mins our bus finally showed up. We got on and were drove somewhere in Henderson I do believe. Then got off the bus and herded like cattle into where we needed to check-in. We were divided up into different groups dependent upon which rim of the Canyon we were going to. We were off to the West Rim (which housed the famous Skywalk). We almost opted to upgrade to the helicopter/boad ride excursion, but decided against it after realizing we wouldn't get much extra time to explore the Canyon itself.
At long last and after a horrid "continental breakfast" we were on our way. The drive itself took forever it seemed. Kev slept pretty much the whole way there. I stayed up though cuz I didn't wanna miss a second of the journey. Took pictures of the landscape and they even played "Vegas Vacation" for us to watch to keep entertained. Once we got there the bus driver pretty much dropped us off at the food hut and took off. He wasn't the best tour guide, let me tell you. He was pretty much like you've got 1 hour here, be back on the bus by then or else we'll leave you. Not like he stayed with us or anything. He had people pass around meal tickets on the bus and some retardo ended up keeping one. Well me & Kev were in the back so that left one of us without one. Kev graciously gave me the sole ticket left but I marched right up to the driver and raised hell (as only a redhead can) and the driver gave Kev his meal ticket. Then the driver had to go all the way back to the entrance to get him another one after he dropped everyone else off. Kev felt bad but I didn't. We paid for that ticket!
We grabbed some Hualapai indian grub and got a picnic table right on the edge of the Canyon. Literally right on the edge. If I had gotten up and taken 3 steps forward I would have been a goner. No guardrails or anything. Kevin kept scaring me too. He was getting so close to the edge to take pictures. I tried to film a bit with the camcorder too. But I wasn't nowhere near the edge. No sir re. We explored the area for a bit and bought some souvenirs from Hualapai injuns. Apparently it was forbidden to take rocks or anything but they're allowed to sell you rocks that they've painted on. Strange huh.
After that we were off to the Skywalk. Saw some pretty cool rock formations. My fav was the "Sleeping Dog". From far off the Skywalk looks really cool. But from close up its not. I can't believe we paid $25 each just to walk on that thing. You can't even take anything with you, no camera or cell phone, they even make you walk through a metal detector. Taking pictures out there is forbidden by tourists but yet they can take your picture and then sell it to you for like $20. Such a tourist trap. We had to put these special booties on so we wouldn't scratch the glass while we walked out on the Skywalk. I gotta admit its a nice view but its not as good as it could be. I thought you'd be way out over the rim but in all actuality you're not really that far out. You can't see the bottom of the Canyon or anything.
Then we ran back to the bus so we wouldn't get left behind. Off to our last stop.....the gift shop of course. Its a wonder there was anything left once we got out of there. We got way too many souvenirs. Just ask the stuffed eagle that lives in our living room now. Haha. But I did get me a "pet" cactus. I thought he was just a magnet but turns out he was an actual live cacti. How cool is that. He lives in my office now. And he drinks way tooo much water. :)
Then the long ride home. Kevin was awake this time. :) We stopped about halfway back at this lil chocolate factory and got ice cream. Yummy. The driver even had the nerve to mention on the way back that its ok for us to tip him if we feel he has given us excellent service. WTF!?! Needless to say nobody gave him a tip from what I can tell. Time we got to the hotel we were exhausted so we just relaxed in the room for a bit. I ended up with a horrid sunburn on my shoulder. From my darn WVU purse strap.
After a change of clothes we headed to Pampas Brazillian buffet in the Miracle Mile to use our free dinner we got for attending the timeshare. I must say I really liked this place. Never been anywhere quite like it. They bring all these foods around to your table on skewers and then slice stuff off on your plate. Not for a vegetarian though. Our "free dinner" specs only allowed us a sampling of their "hot" buffet. Kevin splurged and got the "cold" buffet as well (seafood galore). I splurged and got me a plate of cheesy fries. So much for a "free" meal. We still ended up spending like $30 - $40 bucks. Kinda like a regular dinner back home. Our waitress sucked though. She was awful. Kev went w/o a beer for half his meal. :( She got like a $1 tip in the end! Haha! We showed her! Or I did...Kev still wanted to leave a good tip, but I told him heck no! :)
We purchased most of our souvenirs, went back to the casino for some free drinks and a lil more gamblin before retiring. Got a big day planned tomorrow...Heading to Hoover Dam most of the day with Fremont Street in the evening! :)

Hoover Dam & Fremont Street

Another day up bright and early ofr our Comedy Bus Hoover Dam tour. I was so exhausted I had trouble getting up and almost made us late for the bus! We practically ran to the bus loading station but our bus was nowhere to be found. After waiting for awhile this lady came running across the valet/parking lanes yelling "Are you Heather & Kevin?" Seems their bus driver had never been to the PH and didn't know where the buses were supposed to pull in at. Heck at least they did come to our hotel to get us.
Our tour guide was Joanie. And she was awesome! So funny. She cracked me up the whole trip. Has to be the best tour guide in Vegas! I highly recommend Comedy on Deck tours. She picked on us like the whole time. Told us she knew we couldn't be married that long because she could tell from looking that we still liked each other. Lol. Said give it a few more years and that'll change. Haha. Even said we'd have some "good-looking" babies one day. We had one more stop to pick up the rest of our group and then we were off to the Dam. Joanie made the ride there quite entertaining. Not a dull moment on this bus. She actually remembered every persons name the whole rest of the day. And there had to be like 20-25 of us.
Before you cross over the Dam you have to go through a security check point. So Joanie gave us all these funny glasses, lips, and pirate hats to put on. We looked so silly. The security guy came on the bus to search us and busted out laughing. Haha. Once we got to the Dam we divided up into separate groups based on which package we purchased. We opted for the Dam Ultimate VIP tour. Joanie took us on a walk-through over the top of the Dam. (Comedy on Deck is the only tour guide with a fully guided walk-on tour on top of the Dam). It was unbearably hot out out there. Joanie said that on a day like that it would reach 140 degrees on top of the Dam. Dam thats hot!
After quelching our thirst with some water, we headed down down down deep into the Dam. Deep into the Black Canyon for a look at the Nevada Powerhouse. Awesome stuff there. After that we were on our own for awhile to take pictures and sightsee. Apparently Joanie had given us all a specific time to meet back at the bus, but me & Kev being in awe of the Dam must haven't missed that part. We roamed around for far too long on our own. Next thing I see if Joanie running after us yelling "Where have you two been?". We've been looking for you for over an hour. Ooops. Our bad. We promptly apologized and felt like such losers as we made it back on the bus. And lowered ourselves down into our seats in the back. Joanie promptly told a joke about the two of us "practically newlyweds" having to christen the Dam before we left. Lol. If she only knew....
We stopped for a brief photo stop at Lake Mead. Beautiful....I've never ever seen water so blue. Then we made our way back to Boulder City for a made-to-order lunch at the Boulder City hotel. Delicious! The hotel itself is supposed to be haunted (#4 out of USA's most haunted) but we explored it all over and never once saw a single ghost. Took a quick tour of the Boulder Dam museum. Then we all headed back to Vegas. One more quick stop at Ethyls Chocolate factory for a chocolate sample. Me & Kev somehow ended up with ice cream again. :) Joanie kept us all entertained all the way back to Vegas. After dropping us off back at the PH, I told Kevin to tip the woman...a big ole tip too. But alas we didn't have any cash left on us, and she didn't take debit cards. Planned to mail her a tip at a later date...she was totally awesome & deserved it!
After a lil rest from the tour and a quick change of clothes, we made our way back downstairs to the valet. Had the valet hail us a taxi and headed toward old school Vegas (aka Fremont Street). The taxi was a bit pricey but well worth it. Theres no way I'd walk that far. Fremont Street is fascinating to me. All the old casinos and shops. Their buffets are alot cheaper too. So are most of the souvenir shops. We got our puppy Dexter a Las Vegas shirt at Vegas Muttwear. Checked out the Golden Nugget, loved the pool with the shark tank. How cool is that? I'd love to stay there and go down that water slide! We ate at the Paradise Buffet at the Fremont hotel. Quite good. Bought some souvenirs and explored the old Vegas. I wish we'd had spent more time here on our trip as I really liked the atmosphere. After a while we decided to head back to the strip. Tried to hail a Dodge Charger taxi but got stuck with a van. :(
Another pricey taxi ride later and we were at the Venetian. Love love love that hotel. We strolled around and pretended like we were really in Italy. Debated taking a ride in the gondolas but the line was way too long so we opted not to. Now I wish we woulda waited it out.
After parting ways with the dear Venetian we checked out The Mirage and Treasure Island. Both quite nice. We tried to catch the Sirens show at TI but it was so ungodly crowded. All these parents had their kids right up front watching and its basically a show about pirate hooker prostitutes. Lol. Oh well. Then we waited and waited and waited at the Mirage for the cursed volcano to erupt and it never did.
Somehow we ended up at Casino Royale. I don't know if it was their drink specials or their gamblin specials but we spent a great deal of the rest of the evening there.

Planned Spring Trip To Vegas

Getting things going

Well we haven't left yet, but I wanted to play around with this a little bit. I added some pictures of the place we'll be staying at, as well as a few items I know we have planned already. Now I just need to work on a few other things, like plan beyond the first day. I don't want my entire seven days scheduled, but I would like to do at least one thing every day.
